Barcelona - Day 2
So I'm a bit slack at getting back to this but things have been busy in London. Nick's parents are in London at the moment so we have been doing the tourist thing. It's fun to show off how much we both know about the place!
So last time it was day one Barcelona.. here's the next one
Barcelona – Day 2 - Parc Montjuic
We left our apartment at about 10.30am and headed for Parc Montjuic on the way picking up supplies for a birthday picnic.
Unfortunatly the funicular was not working so we had to climb up to the castle and the park - fantastic views all the way but WHOA am i unfit!
At the top of the climb was Castell De Montjuic, where we stopped for a picnic looking out to Barcelona and the sea. It was just wonderful! The first stones of Castell De Montjuic were laied in 1640 and it was used as a prison and torture centre for political prisoners. These days tho it is a popular tourist spot surrounded by imaculate gardens and a stunning view of the bay.
After looking around the old castel (where Nick even found a small comic exhibition...) we started our walk down to the Estadi Olimpic where the 192 Olympic games were held. I would have expected an Olympic stadium to be bigger, in fact i think the MCG is.. (correct me if i'm wrong) and then on to Museu National d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC). We decided that we wouldn't go in to the museum as it was such weather and we couldn't justify missing the sunshine. The MNAC is a beautiful building with a view down to Font Magica.
From here we walked west to a building that was designed by Pavello Mies van der Rohe and was germany contribution to the 1929 Exhibition. It houses the sculpture Morning by George Kolbe.
Last stop for the day (and just a little bit further up the hill) was Poble Espanyol, a miniature Spanish village which was interesting but perhaps a little tacky/kitch to be believable and considering it was 8 euro to get it we were a little disappointed.
Exhausted and very sunburnt (although we didn't know at the time) we made our way back to the apartment for an afternoon nap.
For dinner that night we went to the Barri Gotic district and had a drink at a bar called shilling (No 1 bar in the top ten in Barcelona book) before moving to Agut d'Avignon (No1 restaurant in the top ten book) for a fancy Birthday dinner. As the birthday girl I had nothing complain about, it was a great day, all but when i woke up the next day in AGONY from sunburn but i'll save that for the next story.
