Christmas in detail
So without boring you all i thought i'd go into a bit more detail of the time we had in York.
Nick and I arrive in York at 12pm and Richard my dad's cousins son ( oh hell lets just say my cousin) picked us up from the train station and took us to Guy and Eleanor's Place or 101 as it is known. Lunch was spread out for us and after filling our tummy's we headed in to York for a look around.
The centre of York has a huge wall around it that were built in the Roman times to defend the city from attacks. We got about a quarter of the way around before we were sidetracked by the other thing that York is famous for..... Chocolate... mmm those butter milk creams... YUMMY! Then it was off to admire the York Minster... Breathtaking...
That night was dinner at 101 and then drinks at the pub (Tap and Spill) with all the cousins/friends and partners.
Next morning was Christmas Eve and Nick and I headed in to climb the Minster and do the tourist thing.
Firstly we went to the Jorvik Viking Centre which was set up as tho you were getting in a time machine... oh so corny... and traveling back to the year 645AD (i think that was right). They had recreated all the sites and sounds and even smells of Jorvik... phew did it smell! After this we headed to the Castle Museum where they had recreated a Victorian Street with all the shops and cobble stone streets etc.
That night was dinner at Maurice and Haleh's and then midnight mass at the Minster. The mass was quite incredible, like all those British wedding you see on TV, i felt like i was sitting just there. Oh and hearing 'Oh come all ye faithful' echo in the halls at the end of the mass, well it just felt like Christmas!
Christmas day was a slow start... slept till 11 - bliss - and then headed down stairs to see the place transformed to seat 22 ppl for a full Christmas lunch of turkey, salads, every kind of potato, carrot and suede, brashly sprouts, peas, onions, roast tomatoes and much more. Sweets were a very yummy strawberry trifle and then another with lycee and black cherries. One thing to note tho (Grandma esp) they leave out the custard in there trifles... which should be a sin as they were yummy but without custard they just were not quite right.
Christmas night started with a nap at 5 till about 7.30 and then we all watched Incredibles and continued to eat.... god only knows how tho.
Boxing day we headed for the traditional walk on the moors. We set out complete with chocolates in our pockets and our jeans tucked into our socks (oh so attractive and i have a photo of Mr Style himself doing this so if you would like proof drop me a line and i will send photos) The walk was amazing, green hills and trees covered in the leaves turning orange. Yes it was cold tho... so cold that the puddles had frozen and all the BIG boys... ages 28 thru to 35 had a grand time testing if they were strong enough to walk on. The walk finished up back at Molly's boyfriend Nick's parents place where we all collapsed only to be revived with bowls of steaming hot stew.
That night we headed of to the movies with Maggie and Tom (Tom is my second cousin) to see House of the Flying Daggers - very good, and less 'flying' than crouching tiger too which always annoyed me a little.
Our last day was spent mixing between the post Christmas sales and the sites of York. During the day we even made the climb to the top of the Minster..
The train ride home was a bit of (understatement) a debarkle tho... instead of York to London via Chesterfield in 3 hours it was York > Chesterfield (wait 50 mins) >Birmingham (run to different station) >Lemington Spa>Banbury (by bus) > London and it took us 7 hours all because the trains were running as tho it was a weekend not a week day and someone forgot to updater the system.... sheeesh, we are laughing about it now as it could have been worse (not speaking language or snow) but still its a good story. Rumor has it that Nick and I were not alone in our struggles to get home and that all over Britain nearly 1000 ppl had their trains ... dissapear...
So there you are, that was Christmas. A big thanks to the York Dodson's for having us, we had a lovely time. Oh and a big thanks too to all of you back home for the cards, text messages, and phone calls over Christmas. Grandma and the Ward/Tohl's it was wonderful to speak to you all, Ali and Simon thanks for the card, Lizzy thanks for the present, JT your gift will sit on my new desk (Did i mention i got a job and start on the 5th! That will be subject of next post perhaps). Mum and Dad and Will thanks for sending over my gown and the canvas and the other treats from home, i love em!
Love to you all
Cherry x
