The Londoner vs the Tourist
I have started catching the bus home from work this week, mainly because it drops me off out the front of my door and i get lots of time to read (the 94 is about a 40 min trip in traffic door to door).
On the way home last night someone got on the middle doors of the bus, i didn't notice her get on but the bus driver certainly did as he imediatly turned off the lights and the engine. The man sitting near the door where the girl got on looked at her and said "See this is your fault you low level scum of society", "Why do you think you can get away with not paying for a ticket, you stupid little bitch", (a few more ppl on the bus cheer!). The girl looked at him, confused, and at this point i was not even sure if she could speak english. The man continued "Yes i know you're a tourist but we've all (pointing to the rest of the bus) had a big day at work and would like to go home so get the fcuk(sic) off the bus". If i had been the girl i think by this stage i would have cried... and to make it more confusing the middle doors were closed so it was not obvious that she did indeed need to get off the bus. Still the man continued with audience support, "Look if you don't get off the bus i will throw you off myself and i'm sure the rest of the people here will help". Finally in a thick Russian accet the girl looked and the man and murmured 'shut up'... from that it was clear she probably didn't know what she had done wrong... The doors finally opened and she got off.. not coz she had to but thru fear i'd say... Once she was off the engine started and the bus took off...
I sat there for the rest of the journey thinking that i was quite happy to be on the side of the tax payers in London. If this had been the Glenelg Tram i can see it being a completly different story, some kind person would have explained the issue and all would have been ok, or the tram driver would not have even noticed.... Tho friends and family would know that the tourists on the tram always drove me batty... "Oh isn't this fun!", "Where do i by a ticket", "Is this tram going to Glenelg or the city" (?) what the...... and in my head i'm saying "sit down and be QUITE!" But gosh i would never have said it aloud.
I'm beginging to understand that for Londoners the tourists must get frustrating with their maps and their camaras and aimless wandering. When i head to lunch each day i walk thru piccadilly circus and there are always tourists, they don't both me yet, in fact i consider myself an advanced tourist.
It must become easy to become blaze about where you work/live/play. The lads in the office said yesterday... "there is just nothing to do around here at lunchtime". My ears pricked up at this... "I beg your pardon!", "Do you have any idea where you are", "You work on Piccadilly, Regent St is 1 min away, Lesteir St is 4mins and Oxford St is 6 min... you sure you have nothing to do" They looked sheepish.. "Oh yeah..."
I guess it just takes foriegn eyes to show you what you have = )

Hey Cherry,
Sounds like you are having fun. Tony and Cathy keep us up to date with all that is happening. (Yes you are missed). I noticed the kids get on here every now and then but I'm not sure how often they post messages back to you.
Weather here today fantastic - 36C. Kerry and I went for a walk along the beach as the sun set. Really beautiful and mae me think of you as I realised as the sun was setting here it was rising for you.
Had a lovely swim when we got home.
Now I'm doing a bit of research into Dodson Family tree just to work out where we all came from. Noticed that on Fanny Harris's birth certificate she was born at home which was in London.
So
If every you have NOTHING to do and you want to be a bit touristy and you are not far from London Zoo/Pentonville Prison then try finding 147 Hemingford Road BARNSBURY. It is where your Great Grandmother was born on 5/5/1867. It is her family home.
Have a great week.
John
